How to get rid of pests without killing them.
Although the sound of a mouse or similar pest running around your attic and keeping you awake at night isn’t always fun – not everyone wants to see the poor little chap meet his end in a conventional mouse trap.
Ultra sonic devices are now available that can lead to an all more pleasant solution to the problem. The sound, which is inaudible to humans just happens to get right on the mouse’s nerves. The wavelength is designed to repel mice, rats, squirrels and other pests without having to finish them off or clear away the remains afterwards.
Most units plug into a mains socket and are left on emitting a very high frequency sound that is beyond our hearing range. The one I got uses different frquencies to target mice and rats. The pests can either hear this sound or in the case of very small insects and bugs, they can feel it. This makes it unpleasant for them to stay in the same area and they look for somewhere else. Admittedly the problem is just being moved along, but never the less it does work. The system will also deter any new pests from taking up residence.
In order that the pests don’t get used to the sound and decide to stay, the units change their frequency intermittently either manually or automatically. Some of the latest combine ultrasonics with electro magnetic pulse technology. This can be discharged from the unit or sent around the home through the electric wiring. These pulses are also believed to deter pests. Some units ionise the air in final attempt at getting mice and rats to stay away.
The technology behind these systems hasn’t been fully proved but generally they do seem to work. Some people love these devices and wouldn’t be without them.
Perhaps the most interesting discovery comes from those who have purchased an ultrasonic device intended to repel mice from their cellars or squirrels from their attics and have reported that wasps and other insects have vanished too. A UK company has now introduced a gadget called a ‘Mosquito’ which emits a very high frequency sound only audible by those over about 25 years old. This is aimed at stopping teenagers forming gangs and loitering around off licences and shops. It just shows, whatever pest you’re trying to get rid of, there’s a device to suit.
I had a problem with a couple of squirrels in my loft – all night scraping about and scratting at the wood. I tried everything, nothing worked until I installed a ultrasonic pest deterrent. I bought a thing called an ‘Electronic Ultrasonic Pestcontro II Deluxe‘ which sounds fancy. It certainly got my mice and squirrels to move out. Now I can sleep at night!
